I love this thing. I live alone, so I am not worried about needing to be courteous of someone trying to sleep next to me while I stay up all night. This serves another valuable purpose for me. I take it with me on the airplane. I travel a decent amount and I do my best to avoid turning on the overhead light. I find that it is too obtrusive to other people on the plane who are trying to sleep or enjoy the flight in relative peace and darkness. Cue my light panel . I can read with more than enough light and not bother the people around me.
I like it so much I got one for my mom for Mother's Day. She fits into the category of readers who have tried EVERY booklight on the market and thus are dissatisfied with them all. She loves her Doniku light panel. Good brownie points for me.
The biggest advantage of this booklight is that it can spread a nice, diffuse light over the pages you're reading and at the same time not keep your sleeping partner up at night. Also doubles nicely as a bookmark when you're done for the evening. Battery life seems very good.
I have never had a book light before this one, so I cannot make comparisons. I am however VERY pleased with the portable light panel (original size). I am a voracious reader and I see this lasting a long time. The light diffuses very well across the page.
Designed for large format paperbacks or normal-sized hardbacks, the portable light panel is a piece of art in design and works great. I have an astigmatism and even with my contacts out I can read without strain using the portable light panel, and my wife next to me has never once been awoken in two weeks use.
I was somewhat disappointed that the plexiglass screen was lightly scratched within the first fifteen seconds of use - but this has not affected its performance and was really only disappointing because it's a lovely item in the first place. There are faint curved bands of what my unscientific mind would call polarization in the plexiglass screen when then portable light panel is held flat against a page - it's mildly distracting but can be avoided by slightly raising it off the page or ignoring it altogether.
I was looking for a reading light that allowed me to read in bed without turning on a light. This portable light panel did the trick. It is an interesting gadget. By illuminating the plexiglass your book page underneath also gets lit. I will admit it was difficult to get use to. Having to move this from page to page was annoying at first, but I got the hang of it soon enough. The glass does scratch easily. Whether or notep it in its protective foam it will get scratched. Most of the scratches come from the paper pulp itself.
All in all this is a great light and I have been enjoying it for almost a year now.
